  • Phraseological units, understood as a complex lexical construction of more than one word, have been studied under various names and different theoretical approaches. Bally (1951) introduced the notion of locutions phraseologique to indicate fixed word combinations characterized by a high internal structural and semantic cohesion. Corpas Pastor (1996: 20) defines phraseological units as multiword lexical units composed by at least two graphical words (and a whole sentence as its upper limit), which are further characterized by a high frequency of coocurrence of their components and by various degrees of institutionalization, such as formal frozenness, inner fixation, and semantic specialization or opacity. Fixation has traditionally been considered one of the fundamental characteristics of phraseological units, but there are approaches that support the gradualness of this feature, which makes phraseological variations possible. These variants are derived from a phraseological unit, but they maintain the same meaning, and are partially identical in structure and in their components. Since fixation is not determined by some grammatical nor semantic rule, since it is arbitrary, it is difficult to identify. Regarding the phraseology of diatopic varieties of Spanish, there is still a lack of studies that address a detailed description of the possible types of variations which represent a very important factor for language learners and translators, and are a frequent cause of major errors. This paper focuses on diatopic phraseology of Spanish and aims to describe the phraseological variation of Spanish spoken in Argentina. We contrast a lexicographical corpus with surveys in order to identify variation on phraseological units recently created or not contained in dictionaries. We base our study on Montoro del Arco's (2004) phraseological variation classification, and we identify different types of variation, both internal and structural, as well as particular variations of Spanish spoken in Argentina.
