LFE y la necesidad de trabajar destrezas profesionales en Grados técnicos

    Con este artículo nos proponemos dar a conocer la experiencia empírica de carácter docente-investigador que hemos llevado a cabo en el último año (2013-14).

    Pretendemos enfatizar el papel del inglés con fines específicos, más concretamente de carácter científico-técnico en el ámbito académico y profesional. A partir de nuestra experiencia en el aula, nuestra hipótesis de trabajo ha consistido en explorar hasta qué punto puede un proyecto como éste diagnosticar las dificultades con las que se encuentran los estudiantes al hacer una presentación académica.

    Esta investigación se ha llevado a cabo con estudiantes del último curso de Ingeniería de Organización Industrial (perfil Defensa), que tienen que defender su Proyecto Fin de Grado en lengua Inglesa. De estos estudiantes también se espera que desarrollen su carrera profesional en escenarios multilingües y usen el inglés como lengua vehicular (tienen que alcanzar un nivel B2 de Marco Común Europeo).

    La metodología utilizada ha sido doble. Por una parte, les dimos pautas para preparar una presentación académica. A continuación, contestaron a las preguntas de un tribunal. En esta fase tomamos notas, rellenamos unas rúbricas y les dimos feedback para que mejoraran su competencia. Además, respondieron a una serie de encuestas sobre la experiencia y posibles fórmulas de mejora. El análisis de las encuestas ha sido un feedback muy valioso para implementar en nuestra labor futura.

    En conclusión, cualquier otro docente puede desarrollar nuestra experiencia, que consideramos muy interesante porque los resultados pusieron de manifiesto deficiencias en nuestro programa. Además, esta experiencia ha ayudado a nuestros estudiantes a comunicarse mejor en un ámbito técnico. Por último, este tipo de investigación empírica no sólo contribuye a mantener viva la necesidad de trabajar e investigar en ESP sino también se suma a investigación previa en lingüística aplicada.

    In this paper we show the empiric research we carried out in the academic year 2013-14. We intend to emphasize the role of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and more concretely English for Occupational Purposes in the professional and academic field. From our experience in the classroom, our working hypothesis was to determine to what extent can a project like this help diagnose the main problems students meet when they do an academic presentation. This piece of research was conducted with students who were in their last course of Management Engineering (designed for defence) and who are expected to defend their End Degree Project in English. These students are also expected to develop their professional career in multilingual scenarios using English as a vehicle of communication (getting a B2 level from the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The methodology we used was twofold. On the one hand, we gave them some clues to prepare fully academic presentations.

    Afterwards, they had to defend their presentation in front of a board and answer their questions. In this phase we took notes, filled a template and gave them feedback to improve their skills. On the other hand, students had to fill surveys about the experience and possible formulas of improvement. The analysis of the surveys gave us valuable feedback to implement in our future teaching of the skill.

    In conclusion, any other teacher in his or her ESP classroom could replicate this experience, which we have found tremendously illuminating since these results revealed our syllabus weaknesses. Second, this experience helped our students to be communicatively successful in their technical tasks. In addition, this type of empirical piece of research not only contributes to raise awareness around the need of keeping working with and researching about ESP but also contributes to previous research in Applied Linguistics.
