The author analyses how the outstanding technological advances taking place in the last few years have had a dramatic effect on the contemporary reception of audiovisual productions and, consequently, on the mediating translation for its assimilation by other cultural contexts. He also points out how the evolution of software has universally simplified the technical process. However, these circumstances would have also generated drawbacks in some cases since, in a willingness to make it even more simple, and cheaper, some companies would use automatic translation programmes that lead to lexical and syntactic distortions in the resulting subtitles. Finally, his current research carried out in England allows him to supply updated information on subtitling for the deaf and hard-of-hearing which is at a more advanced stage than ever in either Spain or Italy.
