The author analyses one film, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion, from the director whose work has generated the highest amount of bibliography on AVT in Spain, Woody Allen. The author's main epistemological basis in his article is Grice's conversational maxims (1975), more specifically the maxim of quantity. Here he analyses how the recurrent transgressions of this maxim in various conversational situations in Allen's film clarify the nature of the relationship between the two main characters, who attack each other regularly with extremely long, but very funny, poignant utterances. Consequently, the required reduction to adjust to the subtitling conventions would also diffuse their perlocutionary effect in the new context of reception.
