In this themed issue of Paedagogica Historica, editors PieterVerstraete, Maria Romeiras, and Carlos Manique aim to merge theflourishing fields of disability history and the history of education.Despite past initiatives like the 2005 special issue on disability andeducation and the 34th ISCHE conference in 2012, these fields havelargely remained separate. This issue presents three articles thatintersect these domains, capitalising on recent historiographicalevolutions. Both fields share activist origins, with the history ofeducation emerging in the 19th century and disability history inthe late 20th century. Recent trends in disability history, such asnon-Western perspectives and renewed interest in institutionalhistories, align with the new cultural history of education. Theincluded articles exemplify this synergy by exploring the architec-ture of French deaf institutions, tactile reading systems in East Asia, and the Perkins Institute for the Blind. This collection underscoresthe potential of integrating these research fields.
