The student's t test can be used in education when comparing assessment results for two groups and inferring whether the data are different enough. For example, if we have two groups, one is a test group (Group A) that follows traditional teaching and another that has a learning technique with didactic methodology in its learning process (Group B). We can compare the evaluation results of both groups and try to see if the results obtained in B are relatively different and better than those obtained by the group A. Assuming that the distribution of the evaluation in both groups is approximately normal, then the student's t test can give us a quantitative criterion to check if there was any significant change in the average learning of both groups. Here we show the technique using a simple fictitious sample example, using the free statistical software R, and other free software utilities that will not represent a significant expense for an educational researcher. We hope that this simple example will be useful to the community of teachers, especially in Physics and related Sciences.
