Blood NEFA analysis could be a useful in vivo tool to predict lipid tissue composition. This work evaluated the effect of fasting period and age on the blood NEFA profile of Duroc heavy pigs. The results showed that the main NEFA (oleic, stearic, palmitic and linoleic) were not affected by fasting period, which did not alter their saturation degree. However, the proportion of blood MFA/SFA ratio decreased from 180 to 210 days of age due to decreasing content of oleic and palmitoleic and increasing content of stearic acids. The greatest correlation between individual intramuscular (longissimus dorsi and gluteus medius) fatty acids and blood NEFA was observed for stearic and palmitoleic acids after 12 h of fasting and linolenic acid after 24 h of fasting. Nevertheless, the phenotypic correlation pattern did not allow defining at present a precise prediction model.
