  • In spite of the large tradition of phraseological studies, the diatopic differentiation of units has not been a topic of special interest until recently. Possibly coinciding with the renewed attention towards non-standard varieties, which had been disregarded during large periods of time throughout the history of language. Some scholars have started to focus on the study of local, regional and national variants (the latter in the case of the pluricentric languages) of the phraseological units. The proliferation of phraseological dictionaries that compile this kind of expressions proofs the assumption true. Another example, on a local scale, of the growing interest in this type of units is the decision to incorporate national variants into FRASYTRAM, the electronic multilingual dictionary of phraseological expressions created and managed by the University of Alicante. The present article explores some reasons that might explain why there are such few studies devoted to the topic of geographically marked phraseological units. Some of those that do exist will be presented and discussed in this paper. By revising the research that has already been published in this field, we hope to demonstrate that there are gaps that are yet to be closed if we want to narrow in on the real picture of the complex reality of phraseological units marked by diatopic features. The starting point will be the characteristics and distinctive nature of this type of phrases. Within the framework of the German language system, our study will be based and focus on Austrian multi-word expressions. The geographic reach of the diatopic features we will be talking about varies. It stretches from the local and regional to the national level (in some cases it even transcends the political borders). Nevertheless, we hope to be able to extract some conclusions that can be applied to other language systems as well.
