  • When the first members of the Dominican Order arrived at the New Continent two worlds separated by almost insurmountable differences in terms of language, ideology and culture came eye to eye. From the start, missionaries acknowledged that a true evangelization required a bidirectional transfer of cultural categories perceived as alien in order to achieve a mutual understanding. The anthropological component, always present in any kind of intercultural transmission, turns nuclear within missionary literature. This is the case of the Christian doctrine for the instruction of the Indians by Pedro de Córdoba. The text reveals how this Dominican friar translates the idiosyncratic elements of the Christian religion destined for the spiritual world of the Amerindian societies. Furthermore, he also transfers some specific aspects of the indigenous tradition to the Hispanic sphere. In accordance with its generic adscription (the catechism), the text reflects the main presence of one of the two possible directions of anthropological translation: the transfer of endogenous cultural categories from a Hispanic Christian perspective to the exogenous traditions of the Amerindian societies.
