  • The Form of Confession in the Mixe language by friar Agustín de Quintana, a Dominican missionary born in Oaxaca, published in 1733, is a representative example of missionary literature. The text covers two main areas of the activity of the religious orders in the New World: on the one hand, they paved the way for interlinguistic communication through the creation of dictionaries, grammars, spelling systems and other kinds of linguistic tools; on the other hand, they operated bidirectional transfers of cultural categories perceived as alien in order to obtain mutual understanding and, hence, close the large gap in terms of ideology and culture that separated the indigenous population from the Hispanics. With his text, Quintana delivers something like a language course book that relies on the Christian doctrine as content. Though the main goal of the text is to enhance the language skills of the Christian priests, it also pretends to improve the understanding of the new religion by the Amerindians. This second goal explains why anthropological translation plays a major part in this bilingual work, made up by the original text written in Mixe and its Spanish self-translation.
