The UNESCO Sustainable Development Goals, to be achieved by 2030, are an essential tool for raising awareness of the changes that modern societies must achieve. The educational process and, in particular, the initial training of teachers cannot ignore this collective effort. Thus, in this work we will present a proposed task within the scope of the Curricular Unit of Algebra and Functions, of the 1st year of the Degree in Basic Education (in particular, in the content of the 1st degree equations, 2nd degree equations degree and systems of equations), which seeks to sensitize students to little-known environmental issues such as: gold extraction and water consumption in the production of clothes and other products. This educational practice took place in the 2nd semester of 2022/23 and had two main objectives: on the one hand, to consolidate the resolution of mathematical problems; on the other hand, to make students aware of the fact that many products, such as a simple piece of gold jewellery, have an ecological footprint associated with them that is often not perceptible. The objective of this task is also to make students aware of the environmental price to be paid for options that are convenient (for example, using bottled water) and ostentatious (for example, fast fashion in clothing). It should be noted that, in addition to asking the students to solve the mathematical problem, they were also asked to reflect on the indicated situations and outline possible solutions to eliminate or minimize the underlying environmental problem.
