The valorization of marine macroalgae as a source of bioactive compounds has attracted significant interest due to their potential for developing high-value products in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries, as well as in other fields of application such as agriculture. This research aims to extract, characterize, and optimize bioactive metabolites from brown and red marine macroalgae, focusing on their nutritional and chemical characterization and the evaluation of their biological properties. The bioactive compounds will be analyzed for their antioxidant, antimicrobial, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, and antidiabetic activity through in vitro assays.
The study addresses the optimization of extraction techniques, using sustainable methods such as ultrasound, pressurized liquid-assisted extraction, and high pressures, to improve the yield and concentration of bioactive metabolites. Additionally, molecular docking studies will predict the affinity of the extracted compounds with biological targets relevant to the evaluated activities. The results of this work will not only contribute to the understanding of the bioactive properties of macroalgae but will also enable their more efficient use as raw materials to produce active ingredients or bio-based products of industrial interest. This research highlights the sustainability and utilization of marine resources as a source of bioactive metabolites for their valorization.
