This research consists of a critical literature review on the institutionalization of Criminology in Spain. The text focuses on identifying the milestones of the institutionalization of the discipline and synthesizing the educational models that have emerged around its teaching. The results reveal an evolution in the teaching of Criminology, from the first institutes to its integration into university departments. Four educational models are identified: traditional, positivist, professionalist and critical-sociological.The training model is the one adopted in the European Higher Education Area. The discussion highlights the absences in the historiography of Spanish criminology, especially in relation to the Civil War and Francoism. It points out how these events have been treated superficially or ignored in the literature, which affects the understanding of the institutional development of Criminology. The conclusions suggest that the hegemonic account of the institutionalization of Criminology in Spain omits crucial aspects of its history, favoring a positivist model linked to state penal control. It calls for confronting current notions of university Criminology and addressing historiographical gaps for a more complete understanding of the discipline. One of the main consequences of this approach is the marginalization of critical proposals in the literature.
