Audio description (AD) is an audiovisual translation mode aimed at visually impaired users. It is usually regulated by quality standards and the traditional tendency has been to create an AD taking the image as the source text (ST) to translate it as an AD script. However, some research has focused on the feasibility of using an existing AD as the ST and translating it into any language. The first objective of this proposal is to explore whether the AD of series from Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and Apple TV+ in English and Spanish are traditional or translated AD. The second objective is to propose ways to enhance language teaching using traditional or translated AD. Eight AD from these platforms were analysed, and some differentiation parameters were proposed. Additionally, the latest didactic audiovisual translation (DAT) and didactic audio description (DAD) proposals were examined. As for the results, six series seemed traditional AD, while both series from Apple TV+ were probably translated AD. Moreover, DAD seems to have focused on foreign languages (L2) and traditional AD, but our proposals could be applied to L1 and translated AD too. Given the potential of DAD for language learning, this research should be further explored in the future.
