This study addresses collaboration in virtual higher education environments, focusing on Colombian graduate programs in project management. Employing a methodology that includes participant observation and the analysis of field diaries, key aspects such as leadership, effective communication, and cultural diversity are explored to understand their impact on student collaboration. Findings reveal that these factors are crucial for the success of collaborative learning environments, highlighting the need for pedagogical strategies that promote inclusion and active participation of all students. The discussion centres on the implications of these results for improving educational practice in virtual higher education, suggesting specific recommendations to enhance effective collaboration in graduate programs. This study contributes to the understanding of how collaborative dynamics can be optimised to enrich the educational experience in virtual settings.
