    • Respeaking is a technique used in live subtitling, where the professional adapts an oral message to transform it into written subtitles. This practice is relevant in terms of accessibility, as the subtitles are mainly intended for the deaf or hard-of-hearing population. Although studies in the field of Didactic Audiovisual Translation (DAT) have explored the application of different audiovisual translation modalities in language learning, there are currently no empirical studies supporting the use of respeaking as a pedagogical tool in the language classroom. Consequently, this systematic review in BITRA aims to identify and synthesise existing studies on audiovisual translation, with a particular focus on the contexts and situations in which respeaking occurs, the underlying mechanisms guiding it, and its effects on comprehension and learning. The results show that respeaking is not found in any pedagogical contexts and that the mechanisms of respeaking include adapting to the listener’s level, simplifying language, and restructuring discourse to facilitate comprehension. Didactic respeaking could improve comprehension and information retention, increased listener engagement, and reduced misunderstandings, as explored in discussion and conclusions, which suggest further investigation of this tool in foreign language teaching is required
