  • Resumen
    • The authors analyse how the omission of vocatives can have a negative effect on the original affective function of utterances. They make a descriptive analysis of all the vocative elements present in four films, two American and two English, and explain how, in certain segments, their translation for Italian subtitles may have modified the hypothetical perlocutionary effect of the original. More specifically, they focus their attention on the different ways the main characters address one another with easily disposable terms from a denotative perspective, since the visual seme supplies enough information about the communicative situation, but which would result in a loss of an important emotive element as far as connotation is concerned. Their conclusions are universally applicable, since this translatino strategy for subtitling is commonly accepted in most polysystems.
