The constant transformations that are taking place in the world indicate that it is necessary to modify the ways of teaching. So, teachers need to use different teaching strategies in order to provide learning. With this background, this work emerged from a pedagogical practice developed in the discipline of Mathematical Modeling, of the Strito Sensu Postgraduate Program, in the Masters in Teaching of Exact Sciences, from Univates. The objective, therefore, of this work is to illustrate the results of the development of a pedagogical intervention with students of the third year of High School, in a public school in the city of Sinop, MT, using Mathematical Modeling as teaching methodology. The subject chosen by the teacher was the volume of geometric solids. For the execution of the Mathematical Modeling activity, the students were divided into five groups. To the students was proposed a problem that consisted in calculating the volume of cake mass that would fit in a mold, in the shape of two cone trunks. From this problem situation, the students sought the data needed to solve the problem, such as the measurements of the major radius, the smallest radius and the height of the form. On average, they found a volume close to 3500 cm3 mass. The results were validated and pointed that the verification as well as the application of the mathematical model were successful. It was still possible to observe that activities involving Mathematical Modeling contributed and facilitated the construction of knowledge, besides making classes more dynamic, participatory and creative.
