An experiment was conducted with 32 newly weaned piglets (26 days of age; 6-8 kg BW). The piglets were offered for 4 weeks four dietary treatments arranged according to a 2x2 factorial design, with cereal (rice or barley) and extrusion (with or without) as main factors. At the end of the trial, the piglets were slaughtered and samples of ileal digesta were obtained for the determination of ileal apparent digestibility (IAD) of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), energy, crude protein (CP) and fat. There were no interactions between the two factors for any of the parameters studied. The diets containing rice presented higher IAD coefficients than those containing barley for DM, OM, energy and fat (P<0.05). CP digestibility was not affected by cereal nature. In addition, extrusion also improved the AID coefficients for DM and OM and a tendency for energy (P=0.08). On the contrary extrusion reduced AID for fat (P<0.05), and did not have any effect on CP. It is concluded that AID of DM, OM, energy and fat is higher for rice than for barley, and that these cereals AID of DM, OM and energy can be improved by extrusion.
