  • Resumen
    • The effects of the BMP15 gene on litter size mean and variability were estimated in the Rasa Aragonesa population in which 31,503 lambing records from ewes of known genotype were analysed. Threshold models without the gene effect, with the gene effect and with the gene effect and the interaction between this effect and the set of thresholds were run using the ASReml software. The effect of the gene on the mean was 0.314 lambs per lambing and the interaction between genotype and the set of thresholds was highly significant. However, the change of resulting variance of litter size on the observed scale at a similar mean litter size was very low between genotypes. The effect of the BMP15 gene on litter size variability is much lower than that induced by the Lacaune gene, which reinforces the interest of this mutation in BMP15 for increasing prolificacy in this breed.
