  • Resumen
    • Selection for litter size is required in Iberian pigs due to their low prolificacy and the mandatory use of Iberian sows according to the official regulation of this production. Genetic tests based on markers clearly associated to the trait may be convenient to reinforce conventional selection. The results of a genome wide scan allowed the detection of genomic regions associated with the number of piglets born per litter in 14 regions of the following nine chromosomes: 1, 3, 4, 7, 11, 13, 15 and 18. Three of these regions, in chromosomes 1, 13 and 15, correspond to genes (ESR_, ITHI cluster and EPHA4) with associations with litter size reported in other breeds. The new effects detected in five regions require additional research on underlying candidate genes
