  • Resumen
    • This study analysed the effects of heifer breed and growth rate during the rearing period on the onset of puberty and fertility at fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) at 15 months. Twelve Parda de Montaña and 13 Pirenaica heifers, born in autumn, were assigned to two growth rates during the rearing period (6-15 months: 0.7 vs 1.0 kg/d in Low and High, respectively). The age at onset of puberty was affected by breed (9.0 vs. 10.7 months in Parda de Montaña and Pirenaica, P<0.05). No differences were found in the age at conception (16.4 months) or fertility rate (92%) for any of the main effects. These preliminary results would confirm the feasibility of advancing the first service to 15 months of age in both breeds, provided adult size and calving ease are not impaired at first and subsequent calvings.
