  • Resumen
    • Blanca de Rasquera is a Catalonian breed of goat facing extinction. In 2003, its preservation programme started, and few years later, a sperm bank from breeders according to their genetic variability was constituted. Therefore, in order to increase our knowledge on this local breed as regards creating a sperm cryobank, a study on fresh semen quality was done. Semen was collected twice a day via artificial vagina in an interval of 1 to 2 days per week in autumn from 7 males (3 years old). Ejaculates were evaluated for volume and mass motility using conventional method, acrosome integrity, sperm viability and morphology were analyzed by eosin/nigrosin stain, and plasma membrane function was assessed by hypoosmotic swelling test. Results (mean±SD) showed a volume about 0.86±0.36 mL and mass motility of 4.23±0.57 (scale 0-5) in the first ejaculate, and a volume of 0.77±0.28 mL and mass motility of 4.34±0.57 in the second ejaculate, respectively. No significant difference between individual male results was observed in the sperm concentration (2445.42±848.14 x 106 sperm/mL), sperm viability (79.23±11.6%), and damaged acrosome cells (15.01±9.59%). Morphological abnormalities were low (3.19±2.71%) and resistance to hyposomotic shock was 61.42 % (±18.22). Only one buck produced a significant high total volume.
