This work compared the nutritional requirements of growing-finishing gilts from Landrace x Large-White dams sired by Duroc (n=40) or Pietrain (n=40). Both gilt groups were phase-fed the same 3 diets from 30 to 105 kg. The gilts showed similar feed intake and growth rate between 10 and 12 weeks of age, but these were greater in Duroc than in Pietrain from 13 to 22 weeks of age. Overall feed conversion rate was greater in Duroc than in Pietrain. The ratio serum urea/creatinine was similar in both groups until 16 weeks of age but thereafter it was greater in Duroc than in Pietrain. Serum LDH throughout fattening was steady in Duroc but not in Pietrain. Faecal nitrogen did not differ but slurry ammonia nitrogen tended to be greater in Duroc compared to Pietrain. Lean gilts (Pietrain sires) may respond to additional aminoacid supply.
