    • A novel probiotic Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis CECT 7210 (Laboratorios Ordesa S.L.) was tested in two experimental models with Salmonella Typhimurium and ETEC K88 during 16 days. In each trial 72 piglets (24 pens, 3 piglets/pen) were distributed in a 2x2 unbalanced design: inoculated or not with pathogens and treated or not with the probiotic. Animal performance and clinical parameters were monitored before (8 days) and after the inoculation (8 days). Moreover, pathogen excretion, fermentation andimmune response were monitored at slaughter at days 4 and 8 post inoculation (PI).Inoculation provoked mild clinical outcomes and significant changes in many of the paramethers studied. Probiotic treatment increased the total concentration of VFAs in the non inoculated animals. Acute phase proteins (PigMAP) were increased with the probiotic in the Salmonella inoculated animals and decreased in the non-inoculated (P=0.022). All these changes could be concomitant with reductions in the intestinal colonization by Salmonella or ETEC K88 with the probiotic treatment (P<0.05)
