The objectives of this study were to know the influence of the piglets' body weight (BW) at birth and BW at weaning on pig performance over time; and also whether segregation with lower BW of pigs at the start of the finishing period could help to reduce farm occupation time without severely affecting carcasses classification. We used crossbreed pigs [Pietrain x (Landrace x Large White)] in both cases. In the first trial, all pigs were individually weighed several times through the production cycle and the main results showed that both BW at birth and at weaning play a significant role on pig BW performance and variability (being more influent the BW at weaning) but their effects were diluted later on. In the second trial and from a more theoretical approach, we observed that segregating between 10 to 20% of the smaller pigs at the beginning of the finishing period may results in a significant reduction in farm occupation time without severely affecting carcass depreciation at slaughterhouse of 80-90% of the pigs. Thus, the 10-20% of the remaining smallest pigs could be fed and managed separately in a better proper way.
