The aim of this study was to compare the grazing behaviour and performance of cattle and horses to assess their complementarity on heather-gorse communities with different area percentages of improved pasture (25 or 80%). Both herbivore species grazed mostly on improved pasture, although mares grazed for longer than cows. In general, mares attained lower body weight (BW) losses than cows during autumn, when herbage availability was lower, resulting in greater mares' BW gains during the whole grazing season in the 80% improved paddock. However, calves showed greater BW gains than foals in both paddocks. Considering the low economic return from foal sales, alternative management strategies should be conceived to reduce horse competition against cattle for quality herbage utilization.
