Resumen
- The work carried out by the missionaries is not only focused on evangelization aspects, but perhaps more importantly is the role they played as avant la lettre anthropologists for the knowledge of the new languages and cultures with which they came into contact. Periodically revisiting the history of religious orders to review the state of affairs regarding a specific Order provides a large quantity of data for the researcher, to enable them to discover, reflect on, interpret and write about a diverse palette of topics. These topics include religious, historical, social, artistic, linguistic, economic, anthropological and ethnographic subjects, and can sometimes even encompass pure science, as a result of including data from natural history and related disciplines. In this article, we focus on aspects related to the translation and interpretation activities of missionaries, in the context of their work to evangelise and civilise their target populations. Given that translation is, in essence, an act of communication, we will see who the actors were and what they did in their cultural context, based on the story of the History of the Order of Preachers by Dominican friar Antonio de Remesal.
