Sperber and Wilson (1986, 1987) have proposed a psychological model which includes the use of implicatures in the pragmatic processes of language comprehension. The aims of this study were: 1) to determine the psychological reality of conversational implicatures empirically; 2) to try out Sperber and Wilsons hypothesis about the logical processes in non-natural understanding of linguistic interactions. Two sets of linguistic stimulus were presented to 120 subjects: 32 conversational indirect question answer interactions and 32 implicatures corresponding to the logical propositions that would be implicated in the linguistic interactions. Time spent by subjects in answering the interactions and in verifying the implicatures was measured. Results support the hypothesis about the psychological reality of conversational implicatures in understanding indirect linguistic interactions. They are also congruent with the hypothesis about the presence of some cognitive functions as verification processes are. This is an empirical support for Sperber and Wilsons model (1986, 1987).
