  • Resumen
    • This article aims to reconstruct the career of director Clarence L. Brown. Beginning in Fort Lee, New Jersey in 1915, Brown was later to become a director and producer in the Hollywood studio system, yet this cinematographer has been largely ignored by historians. His biography has never been published and he is referred to solely as “Greta Garbo’s favorite director” or “a faithful craftsman at the service of Metro Goldwyn-Mayer”. More extensive references to Brown’s work may be found only in periodical publications in English or French.

This article aims to refute a number of erroneous observations which have been made with regard to this filmmaker and provide an interpretation of his films beyond the realm of pre-existing prejudices. To this end, the text begins with a brief overview of Brown’s life and films, in which it may be seen that Brown maintained a considerable degree of control over his production, thereby demonstrating that he was indeed more than a mere worker on the payroll. The article then goes on to discuss stylistic and thematic issues which lead to the conclusion that either Brown’s work is not to be considered strictly in keeping with Hollywood’s classic model, or the very concept of abstract classic cinema itself is in need of revamping.
