Despite the wide range of advantages offered by the implementation of the Content and Language Integrated Learning, bilingual teaching is not without its challenges. Therefore, the main aim of the present study was to examine the views of secondary education teachers on the limitations of the bilingual programme in the region of Andalusia. The data were obtained by means of an ad hoc questionnaire completed by a total of 113 teachers. In order to examine the aim of the present study, the teachers’ comments were analysed using the software programme NVivo. The study revealed teachers’ growing concern over the students’ lack of motivation and poor academic achievement. It was argued that bilingualism may even be discriminatory and perpetuate inequalities.
Moreover, the teachers polled expressed concern about poor collaboration, inadequate textbook design and heavy workloads. The issue of a shortage of in-service training courses was also raised by the teachers, who argued that the lack of well-qualified teachers may impair the quality of education. All these limitations, if not addressed adequately, could hinder the successful implementation of the project. Therefore, these findings should be analysed in depth in order to put forward solutions and maximise the effectiveness of bilingual education.
