  • Resumen
    • This paper deals with certain types of verbal periphrases, which we will refer to as light verb constructions. These are formed by a verb (syntactic nucleus) and a nominal group with a predicative noun, which semantically form a complex predicate. We propose for them a semantically based analysis which overcomes the non-correspondence between the syntactic and the semantic nucleus. As for the formal aspect, the analysis is based on the descriptive model of Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) (Pollard /Sag 1994), associated with the proposal of processing of semantic information called Generative Lexicon (GL), developed by Pustejovsky (1991, 1995).

As for the content of the analysis, we start from the assumption that light verbs select nominalizations with semantic characteristics similar with -or more specific than- their own ones. The semantic restrictions that light verbs impose on their complements are of an argumental and eventive nature. As a result of the unification between the semantic information of verb and noun, we can obtain a semantic representation at the level of the verb phrase, which is structurally identical to an equivalent lexical form.
