This doctoral thesis is developed within the scope of the PhD in Sport Sciences at the Faculty of Sport of the University of Extremadura and focuses on the study of Motor Competence (MC) in pre-pubertal children practising athletics. This work arises from the need to deepen the understanding of motor competence development at early ages, as well as to examine the impact that regular and structured participation in sports modalities, particularly athletics, may have on this process.

In order to address the research questions formulated during the definition of the study topic and title, four main objectives were established. The first objective consisted of reviewing the scientific literature on the relationship between sports participation and/or physical activity (PA) and MC, using three international databases (PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science), with the aim of conducting a systematic review. The second objective was to analyse the motor competence of children practising athletics and to compare it with that of children practising other sports. The third objective focused on the development and validation of a specific instrument for the assessment of MC in the context of athletics. Finally, the fourth objective consisted of the design and implementation of a training programme aimed at developing MC.

In the first study, considering its nature and the defined objectives, an in-depth search was conducted in the aforementioned databases in order to gather the available scientific evidence related to the variables under study. In the second and third studies, the MC of children practising athletics was analysed and subsequently compared with that of children engaged in other sports. In the fourth study, a specific instrument for the assessment of MC in children practising athletics was developed and validated. Finally, in the fifth and sixth studies, an intervention programme aimed at MC development was designed, implemented and evaluated in terms of its effects.

This thesis represents a relevant contribution to the advancement of scientific knowledge and to the development of the sport of athletics. The literature review provided a comprehensive overview of existing research, revealing that most studies focus on elite athletes and are predominantly conducted within the fields of biomechanics and physiology, with a notable scarcity of research involving children and young people. This gap becomes even more evident when attention is directed towards specific domains such as MC, as existing studies tend to adopt more generalised approaches. The analysis of MC in the sample of children practising athletics, as well as its comparison with children practising other sports, allowed the inference that athletics may be considered a reference sport for the development of MC, particularly among girls. This finding led to the need to further explore MC assessment within the specific context of athletics, resulting in the development of a task integrating the components of stability, locomotion and object manipulation, with the purpose of assessing MC and identifying potential talent within the sport.
