Nowadays, the educational system shows great concern and interest in the development of educational quality. In the case of Spain, this concern is manifested and concentrated, above all, in the Obligatory Secondary Education (ESO), an educational stage that, broadly speaking, is characterized by high rates of school failure and/or of school dropouts at too early ages compared to other European countries (Arredondo and Vizcaíno, 2020).

The need to seek new learning strategies that promote academic motivation and adapt to the needs of a student profile that shows severe difficulties in the main areas or curricular competencies related to reading comprehension and the preparation of written texts is observed, and these competences closely related to school failure (Rodríguez- Jiménez, et al., 2019).

The use of gamification as an educational strategy is explored in this doctoral thesis.

Gamification is defined as the use of game elements in non-playful contexts (Deterding et al., 2011). The main benefits reported on the use of gamification in the classroom are greater commitment and motivation, as well as an improvement in academic results (Alsawaier, 2018). However, it is also mentioned that a poor design in game elements, such as the exclusive use of medals, can imply excessive competition between students and a loss of intrinsic motivation (Kyewski and Krämer, 2018).

This doctoral thesis studies gamification as a playful learning strategy, taking care of and valuing diversity. The use of educational gamification is addressed to increase the motivation, commitment, and academic performance of compulsory secondary education students, designing, and implementing an educational gamification and gamebased learning program called The Legends of Elendor. With these playful strategies it is intended to achieve meaningful learning experiences that favor the classroom climate and the acquisition of curricular competencies.

It begins by defining the hypothesis and work objectives, to then analyze the risk factors for school failure, present gamification as a playful learning strategy and explore its foundations. Next, the designed gamification program is described, and the research derived from the thesis is presented. Finally, the conclusions, limitations and future lines of research are established. This thesis is presented in the form of a compendium of publications. It encompasses four main published articles, the first: a systematic review about the state of the art on the use of gamification in education, the second: a validation of the Gamification User Types Hexad scale (Tondello et al., 2019) for Spanish education students secondary school, the third: the validation of an own questionnaire on Motivation by Cooperative Learning Strategies (CMELAC), and finally the fourth: a study where the program of The Legends of Elendor is applied in secondary school students for the improvement of their reading skills, assessing their effectiveness also by gender, mother tongue and learning difficulties. Finally, in this chapter, an investigation is also added where the influence of gamification in the educational flow of secondary school students is evaluated.

As complementary publications, two exploratory studies of the Legends of Elendor program were carried out, in which students' interest in playful strategies is highlighted.

Playful strategies were also implemented in a Higher-Level Professional Training course to study whether educational gamification is effective regardless of the educational stage. Finally, a qualitative study was carried out on a teacher training course in these playful learning strategies. The results of this thesis reflect a growing interest in playful strategies in the educational field as a potential tool to increase the motivation and academic performance of students thanks to their different game mechanics.

The results obtained establish that educational gamification can achieve improvements in psychological and educational variables, the most predominant being academic motivation, student commitment and academic performance. On the other hand, the results of the validations show that each of the scales constitute valid and reliable instruments. In addition, the structure of the instruments was invariant with respect to gender. Finally, the application of the gamification program The Legends of Elendor had favorable results, establishing a statistically significant improvement in the reading processes, educational flow, and academic performance in secondary school students.

In addition, it was found that gamification can be a strategy that favors the cooperation of students and a formative evaluation with feedback in each session. As future lines of research, it is proposed to delve into new research designs on educational gamification in secondary education; analyze its use with students with functional diversity; develop gamification programs that combine face-to-face and online teaching; and use this educational strategy in the university environment.
