  • Resumen
    • Relationships are part of our lives, but these do not leave us indifferent and they can be a turning point in our lives. As we are relational in nature we need to relate with other people to grow up as persons. This possibility is also present in persons that suffer from an advanced and terminal cancer (ATC). Furthermore, these persons may be more sensitive to this chance as they may suffer as a result of the different types of threats they experience. Nurses are called to take care of them providing comfort, relieving pain and suffering, and also pursuing a peaceful death. The nurse-patient relationship has emerged as the essence of the nursing practice. Authentic nurse-patient relationships are paramount to provide a person centred care. But what is an authentic relationship? And more specifically, what is the nature and the meaning of the authentic relationship with the nurse for the person with ATC? To answer to these questions we conducted a study following the phenomenological-hermeneutical method of Van Manen, gathering the lived experiences of 21 patients. The aim of this type of inquiry is to study the phenomenon as it is lived, so it starts in the lived experience and returns to it by means of the phenomenological text. As a result we grasped the essence of the meaning of the nurse-patient with ATC relationship in the phenomenological text which reveals that the love of nurses to the person the patient is underlines authentic relationships.
