  • Resumen
    • Nowadays, the need for ethical behavior in society is unquestionable due to dominant social problems that concern society, such as poverty, inequality and climate change. These issues have been addressed by private and public initiatives. Regarding universities, they have an important role influencing society to provide intellectual solutions and promote social, economical and environmental welfare. This can be explained by universities’ work on training students, and generating and disseminating knowledge. Also, they have been considered part of the solution because of their positive influence on society. In order to apply such influence, universities should consider strategies that lead to University Social Responsibility (USR) as a base for their strategic management.

This PhD thesis studies USR from the university strategic management approach, discussing the guidelines of the RSU, which include its catalysts, the role it plays, its incorporation into strategic planning, and its barriers. The main objective is to identify the guidelines to integrate USR into strategic management. To initially achieve this objective, a set of USR features were identified through a systematic review of the literature. Next, a Delphi methodology was implemented, in which experts in the subject were questioned about the USR feature and its integration into strategic planning. The goal was to obtain a USR model validated by experts from a strategic management perspective. Finally, the content of strategic plans for Spanish universities was analyzed, in order to validate that USR drivers were considered on strategic plans.

The main results show that USR catalyzers are closely related to students and their importance as principal stakeholders. The principal catalyzers were those related to the promotion of responsible competences, such as the ability to work under a code of ethics or responsible behavior, and the acquisition of knowledge to investigate and interpret findings ethically. Results demonstrated low correspondence between USR catalyzers from Delphi methodology and those identified in the strategic plans, creating the need of increasing the number of studies on the subject. This thesis implications concern the entire university community, since effective integration of USR requires commitment, collaboration and communication between every university stakeholder. Nevertheless, implications mainly involve university authorities, because they are responsible for implementing these strategies. Finally, it should be considered that the contributions of this thesis have resulted in three publications, which are the main objectives of study in this PhD thesis by compendium
