¿Por qué Groenlandia es un factor estratégico en el Ártico?

    Groenlandia siempre ha estado ahí en el mismo sitio, por lo que ¿por qué ahora en los últimos tiempos está levantado tanto interés? Son diversas las razones. Una de ellas radica en la declaración de la Organización Mundial de Meteorología que afirmó que el nivel de los océanos continúa aumentando y un importante responsable es el casquete de Groenlandia que representa el 25 % de este aumento. Debido a este cambio climático, se esperan obtener grandes riquezas naturales de esta gran isla y la apertura de nuevas rutas de navegación más económicas y seguras. Por estas razones han puesto sus ojos en este helado territorio Rusia, China y Estados Unidos, cada uno con distintas estrategias. China ha desarrollado una presencia que por ahora tiene un carácter sobre todo económico y científico, aunque está preparando una red comercial. Rusia, aspira a ser la primera potencia económica y militar en el Ártico. EE. UU. considera que esta isla es fundamental para la seguridad y defensa de Norteamérica y de forma muy especial su base aérea de Thule, con base en Groenlandia.

    Greenland has always been in the same place, so why is there such a big interest lately? There exist several reasons why. One of them lies in the statement of the World Meteorological Organization which asserted that the level of the oceans continues rising being its main perpetrator is the Greenland cap, which represents the 25% of this increase. Due to this climate change it is expected great natural resources be obtained from this island and the opening of new, cheaper and safer shipping routes. For these reasons, Russia, China, and the United States have focused on this frozen territory but each of them with different strategies. China has developed a presence that, at least for now, has an economic and scientific nature although it is also preparing a commercial network. Russia aspires to be the first economic and military power in the Arctic. The United States considers this island to be key for the security and defence of the country and specially of the Thule air base, based on Greenland.
