    África renace; su crecimiento demográfico, el despertar de sus gentes y las ingentes riquezas que atesora su subsuelo, entre otros aspectos, llevan a una nueva puesta en valor del continente.

    En ese entorno africano, el Sahel, que suele ser noticia básicamente por cuestiones ligadas a tragedias y desastres, y que ocupa una posición que le confiere el papel de espacio intermedio y de transito entre la costa mediterránea y el África occidental y central, tal y como lo fue durante siglos, adquiere también un valor creciente.

    Ante ese creciente valor, nuevas potencias, distintas a las clásicas presentes en el continente, hacen su aparición intentando ocupar una posición de ventaja en el nuevo orden mundial que se está reconfigurando desde el fin de la Guerra Fría, a la vez que buscan obtener beneficios de todo lo que África y el Sahel pueden proporcionar.

    Un sucinto análisis de estas cuestiones, así como una pequeña presentación de algunos de los nuevos actores más destacados y sus intereses principales, conforman el presente documento.

    Africa is reborn; its demographic growth, the awakening of its people and the enormous wealth that its subsoil treasures, among other aspects, lead to a new enhancement of the continent.

    In this African environment, the Sahel, which is usually in the news basically for issues related to tragedies and disasters, and occupies a position that gives it the role of intermediate space and passage between the Mediterranean coast and West and Central Africa, as it was for centuries, also acquires a growing value.

    Given this growing value, new powers, different from the classic ones present in the continent, make their appearance trying to occupy a position of advantage in the new world order that is being reconfigured since the end of the Cold War, while obtaining benefits from everything what Africa and the Sahel can provide.

    A succinct analysis of these issues, as well as a small presentation of some of the new leading actors and their main interests, make up this document.
