Within the multilingual phenomenon that is the European Union, minority languages can tend to be overlooked. "Languages of state", for obvious reasons, take precedence, and the complicated mechanisms for ensuring their use at the official level almost automatically limit the visibility and diminish the relevance of the many other languages spoken within the European space.
This publication is the work of leading specialists on Europe`s minority languages, twenty-four of which are treated in detail. Each specially written chapter looks at the history, current state and future prospects of one of these languages and examines its distinctive linguistic features. Taken together, the chapters -themselves written in four languages (English, French, Spanish and German)- offer a uniquely broad view of minority languages on the European continent today.
