    • In my book collection are several editions of A Boy’s Playbook of Science by John Henry Pepper.1 In the 1860 edition is the illustration in Fig. 1. Here we see an older couple from the rural countryside paying a visit to the seashore. In the figure is a vertical opaque projector. In the course of replicating this device, albeit on a smaller scale, new uses for the close-up lenses that are used with my own digital single-lens reflex camera were discovered. In this article, after reminding readers of the physics of close-up lenses, these uses will be described: the vertical opaque projector and the telescope
