    En este artículo por medio de una revisión de la historia intelectual se analiza la consolidación de la figura intelectual en Francia con el Affaire Dreyfus en 1898 para entender las diferencias con la historia de las ideas. Este artículo muestra donde surgió la popularidad de la palabra “intelectual” lo que permite establecer acuerdos y desacuerdos entre: historia de las ideas, historia del ensayo e historia intelectual en Latinoamérica en el siglo XX. Como lo han demostrado investigadores la popularidad del sustantivo o adjetivo “intelectual” se relaciona con el Affaire Dreyfus en 1898, coyuntura que también es considerada el nacimiento del grupo de intelectuales. Así, por medio de este artículo se comprenderá que no son intelectuales todos los ensayistas o quienes escribieron textos para la historia de las ideas.

    In this article through an intellectual history’s approach, we analyze the intellectual figure’s consolidation in France with the Dreyfus Affair in 1898 to understand the differences with history of ideas. This article shows where the popularity of the word “intellectual” comes from, which allows us to establish agreements and disagreements between the history of ideas, essay history and intellectual history in Latin America in the 20th century. As researchers have shown, the popularity of “intellectual” adjective or noun is related to the Dreyfus Affair in 1898, conjuncture that is also considered the birth of intellectuals’ group. Thus, through this article it will be understood that not all essayists or history of ideas’ writers are intellectuals.
