In this study we shall deal with the main syntactic features of the Aorist in Ancient Greek and Serbian language and their mutual comparison. On the basis of examples excerpted from Pseudo-Longinus's essay «On the sublime» we shall indicate the Greek translating equivalents at their Serbian-Croatian version. The basic object of this respective comparative paper between two unrelated language codes reflects the fact that in the Modem Serbian Aorist is classified among obsolete tenses, although it appears with an impressive frequency in narrative or poetic inspirations, whilst in the ancient Greek it is presented as a dominant past tense. In addition the textual nuances that illustrate the use and the functions of the Aorist Indicative (complexive, gnomic, dramatic, empirical, epistolary, ingressive, narrative, resultative, temporal) in Greek leads us to the unquestionable conclusion that in spite of the expected similarities a more than striking difference lies in the assertion that in the Serbian-Croatian translation the Perfect tense is exclusively used. A corpus contrastive analysis of 92 examples from ancient Greek text and their translation equivalents in Serbian is conducted and also a quantitative approach to the obtained data that have been summarized and presented in tables.
