The paper is focused on a new interesting aspect of computer mediated communication, namely emoticons. A brief exploration of its history is carried out, with a critical review of the existing literature on it. Emoticons main functions and roles are revisited, as they emerge from the not very vast literature on the topic to he found so far The author s opinions are also advanced as to the significance of these pictographs, particularly in educational contexts such as tertiary technical education English for Specific Purposes courses. An approach on possible means of teaching this phenomenon is then proposed, with a cycle of tasks meant to increase the students' awareness of the best ways of using them in communication. The proposed activities are accompanied by the rationale underlying each of them, with a clear intention of initiating an arena of debate on this very new issue.
