The perceptual ability of visual impaired children in the experience of making clay media artworks

    • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the process and results of the experiences of visually impaired children when learning art with clay media. This research was conducted in environments around the children’s daily lives to capture their aesthetic experiences. Methods: The research approach applied sequential exploratory research, emphasizing case studies to analyze various child and socio-cultural characteristics and perceptions of children with visual impairments. The sample of this study consisted of nine children aged between seven to ten years who have visual impairments and are educated at a special elementary school categorized as type A. Results: The results showed that the children exhibited a strong desire to explore their senses of touch and hearing to identify objects around them. They did this through imitating, developing, and imagining. The initial sensory function abilities of the children averaged 72% across various categories of visual impairment, indicating a significant reliance on and development of non-visual sensory abilities. Creating artworks with clay media allowed these children to produce aesthetic value through self-actualization and to express and communicate their ideas and feelings non-visually. Conclusion: The role of parents and the surrounding environment proved crucial in this process, serving as vital sources of information and support. Their involvement is essential for the children to receive the maximum benefit from their educational experiences. The study highlights the importance of tailored educational approaches that cater to the unique sensory experiences of visually impaired children. By focusing on touch and hearing, educators can create more inclusive and effective art education programs. This research underscores the need for ongoing support from both parents and the community to enhance the learning and development of visually impaired children, enabling greater self-expression and communication. © 2024, Artseduca.
