Introduction: This research investigates the tactile experiences with sustainable and bio-based materials and their impact on educational outcomes, highlighting how engagement with sustainable textures enhances students’ creative and environmental learning and increases sustainability awareness. Traditional discourse has mainly focused on the environmental benefits of these materials, often neglecting their significant educational and experiential value. Objectives: The three main objectives are: (1) to explore tactile experiences with various sustainable and bio-based materials; (2) to examine these materials through experiential learning practices; and (3) to measure students’ agreement using a questionnaire on tactile experiences with sustainable and bio-based materials in educational settings, promoting a participatory and tactile-focused learning approach. Methodology: Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study utilized in-depth interviews with three art and design experts, along with participatory workshops and questionnaires to collect data. The research involved 48 student participants across three distinct participatory workshops, facilitating an analysis of their tactile interactions with sustainable and bio-based materials. Results: Descriptive analysis revealed the significant role of textures in enhancing the appeal of tactile experiences and the profound impact of sustainable and bio-based materials on these experiences, thereby enriching educational engagement. The majority of student participants recognized the value of using sustainable and bio-based materials in art and design education, indicating a better understanding and awareness. However, they have been proved to be ineffective in projects related to art. Conclusion: From the academic and practical perspective, the study focuses on the significance of combining tactile experiences with sustainable and bio-based materials in the Education of Art and Design. With the integration of these materials, students will not only enjoy better tactile experiences and stronger awareness of sustainability but also become more active in engagement. To fill in the gap in current literature, the study suggests that further studies as well as the evaluation on the practical use are needed to be explored. © 2024, Artseduca. All rights reserved.
