The article discusses the role of translation in the times of silent cinema, where the history of audiovisual translation runs, in other words, in parallel to the history of cinema and, later, in audiovisual media. Soon after, cinema began to incorporate written language along with iconic representation. It is then that the need arises to translate the written text to understand the film narrative in those countries where the language is not spoken or understood. With this, the article discusses the rapid transition of sound cinema: in search of imaginative solutions, then about the parallel invasion of dubbing and multilingual versions, where it goes even deeper into dubbing with a focus on Spain and Latin America and discusses the historical development of subtitling, and finally, the evolution of audiovisual translation in Spain.

O artigo discute o papel da tradução nos tempos do cinema mudo, onde a história da tradução audiovisual transcorre, não sendo de outra forma, de maneira paralela à história do cinema e, mais tarde, nos meios audiovisuais. Logo depois, o cinema começa a incorporar uma linguagem escrita com a representação icônica. É então que aparece a necessidade de traduzir o texto escrito para uma compreensão da narrativa fílmica naqueles países onde não se fala ou entende a língua. Com isso, o artigo discute sobre a rápida transição do cinema sonoro: em busca de soluções imaginativas, logo sobre a invasão paralela da dublagem e das versões multilíngues, onde adentra ainda mais sobre a dublagem com o foco na Espanha e na América Latina e discute sobre o desenvolvimento histórico da legendagem, por fim, a evolução da tradução audiovisual na Espanha.
