The aim of this research is to determine the values displayed by the morphological future and periphrastic future tenses in a corpus of fragments of broadcasts of five sports disciplines, namely: soccer, tennis, swimming, figure skating, and chess. To do so, first, we transcribed the fragments of the broadcasts mentioned above; then, we identified and recorded both morphological and periphrastic futures; thirdly, we examined the context in which each of them was used; finally, based on previous studies of these verbal forms, we were able to establish the values of each recorded case. In this study, we found that sports reporters prefer the use of the morphological future over the periphrastic future, contrary to what happens in other studies in different contexts. Likewise, the main value of both futures is to express immediate future, followed by the modal value of possibility or hypothesis. Other discursive values that we identified of the morphological future are to indicate a consequence, as well as to display a phatic function specifically of the verb ver in the first-person plural, as happens with certain conversational markers. Of the periphrastic future, we did not find any values other than those already mentioned. With this article we intend to contribute to studies on sports discourse, particularly those focused on the verb tense system.
