The digital competence of future teachers is currently an essential objective for quality education. However, the training of future teachers often focuses solely on the technical aspects of competence, neglecting pedagogical and didactic skills. Therefore, the aim of this article is to explore the perceptions of future teachers regarding the purposes of using digital tools, specifically audiovisual ones, in primary education. This is a qualitative study conducted through an open-ended questionnaire, with the participation of 352 students pursuing a bachelor's degree in Pre-School and Primary Education at the University of Alicante. The results reveal that students consider training in this competence as important and necessary due to current demands. However, they primarily focus on the practical didactic purposes of using digital and audiovisual tools in classrooms, without achieving a comprehensive transversal media education. It is therefore necessary to propose a comprehensive initial teacher training that includes pedagogical aspects to fully acquire digital teaching competence.
