    La transformación política y social que se produjo en el siglo XIX cambió los gustos y costumbres. En el arte aparecieron unos nuevos temas y estilos propiciados por la demanda de las nuevas elites sociales. La familia Muñoz sirve de ejemplo de la evolución social y cultural de la burguesía de la época. Fernando Muñoz no solo aprendió con rapidez a conocer el arte y a incorporar pinturas en su casa de acuerdo con la moda de la época, sino que además asimiló la mentalidad burguesa en lo económico, es decir, en concebir el arte también como un negocio, vendiendo y comprando cuadros como mercancías de valor. Tras la ruptura de los cauces tradicionales del mecenazgo y del mercado artístico, Muñoz supo sortear con éxito dicho inconveniente y formar una colección pictórica de suma importancia al mismo tiempo que conseguía labrarse una fama entre los artistas, convirtiéndose en un auténtico patrón que garantizaba el éxito económico y artístico en la nueva sociedad.
