The corregedores were Portuguese royal officials who emerged in the 14th century to administer the King’s justice, who played a transcendental role in the structuring of the Portuguese State, and also in the integration of a series of Atlantic islands into it, extending its validity during the entire Old Regime; and similarly, the Castilian corregidores exercised a key role in Spain and the Canary Islands, until the arrival of constitutionalism. For all of which, the coincidences between both royal officials went beyond their almost homonymous names; although their differences were greater, as a consequence of the different capacities and forms, with which said monarchies faced the aforementioned structuring and expansive processes.
